Co-operative Education

Overview of Co-operative Education with Oak Bridge Academy
Co-operative Education (Co-op) is a learning partnership program involving the participation of students and staff at OBA and placement supervisors in community businesses and organizations. Co-op provides high school students with valuable hands-on experience, allowing them to apply the skills they have learned to workplaces within their community. 75% of graduates with ASD are unemployed, our goal at OBA is to provide our students with the skills necessary to enter the workforce upon graduation, furthering their independence and autonomy in life!
Student Preparation and Support
Introductory Health and Safety training will be provided for all students prior to beginning their co-op placement. Students will apply for placements that align with their classroom learning, allowing them to enrich that learning through practical application. Students in our Living Skills and Work Experience Program will be provided with in-school behavioural skills training (BST), breaking down and teaching the steps of their anticipated role in their co-op placement. Support will be provided by an experienced registered behaviour technician (RBT) and systematically faded out to allow for independence within the placement! Our staff will always be available to support our students, while also supporting your organization with any specialized training that might be required throughout the placement.

Value of Involving Our Students
  • Promote inclusive student engagement and success
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop and/or generalize learning skills and attitudes
  • Provide unique opportunities to your community
  • Identify and develop future talent to add to your organization
  • Additional help at no cost when resources are limited
  • Diversify perspectives within your organization (organizations report more connection, collaboration, and an overall improved work culture when they have a more diverse employee pool!)
